The Hierophant
UPRIGHT
The Hierophant sits between his two pillars with two acolytes kneeling at his feet, the crossed keys of the tradition laid before him. He is the lineage — the teaching that comes through institutions, the wisdom passed down rather than discovered alone. The card honors the value of orthodoxy when orthodoxy still has life in it, and of teachers who know what they were given and are willing to give it on.
REVERSED
Reversed, the Hierophant is dogma without spirit — the form preserved long after the meaning has left it. The card warns of teachers who serve their own authority rather than the truth, of institutions that demand conformity and offer little in return. It can also name a healthy refusal to accept inherited wisdom on credit, and the harder path of working out one's own creed.
