MAJOR ARCANA
III · Major Arcana
The Empress
UPRIGHT
The Empress sits in her field of wheat with the river running behind her, a crown of twelve stars on her brow and Venus carved on the shield at her side. She is generative abundance — the body that nourishes, the season that ripens, the love that does not need to explain itself. Whatever is asked of her she gives, because giving is the substance of her sovereignty.
REVERSED
Reversed, the Empress is generosity turned smothering, or the well gone dry. The card can mark creative block, a body or relationship that has stopped giving back, a maternal energy curdled into control. It also speaks to neglect of one's own physical life — the wheat field left untended in favor of pursuits that do not feed.
