UPRIGHT

A hand emerges from a cloud holding a cup that overflows with five streams of water, a dove descending with the host above. The Ace of Cups is the first opening of the heart — love offered, grace arriving, the well filled before any drinking has begun. The card names emotional beginnings that do not need to be earned.

REVERSED

Reversed, the Ace of Cups is the cup spilled or the cup refused. The card can name a heart closed against an offering, an emotion suppressed because feeling it would be inconvenient, or a love offered to a person who has not yet built a place to hold it.
